From the authors of the instant New York Times best seller The Strain comes the next volume in one of the most imaginative and frightening thriller series in many, many years.
Last week they invaded Manhattan. This week they will destroy the world. The vampiric virus unleashed in The Strain has taken over New York City. It is spreading and soon will envelop the globe. Amid the chaos, Eph Goodweather - head of the Centers for Disease Control's team - leads a band out to stop these bloodthirsty monsters. But it may be too late.
Ignited by the Master's horrific plan, a war erupts between Old and New World vampires, each vying for control. At the center of the conflict lies a book, an ancient text that contains the vampires' entire history... and their darkest secrets. Whoever finds the book can control the outcome of the war and, ultimately, the fate of us all. And it is between these warring forces that humans - powerless and vulnerable - find themselves no longer the consumers but the consumed.
Though Eph understands the vampiric plague better than anyone, even he cannot protect those he loves. His ex-wife, Kelly, has been transformed into a bloodcrazed creature of the night, and now she stalks the city looking for her chance to reclaim her Dear One Zack, Eph's young son.
With the future of humankind in the balance, Eph and his team, guided by the brilliant former professor and Holocaust survivor Abraham Setrakian and exterminator Vasiliy Fet, and joined by a crew of ragtag gangsters, must combat a terror whose ultimate plan is more terrible than anyone has imagined - a fate worse than annihilation.
The Fall Book Two of the Strain Trilogy (Audible Audio Edition) Guillermo Del Toro Chuck Hogan Daniel Oreskes HarperAudio Books
The Second book in the trilogy picks up almost immediately after the conclusion of `The Strain', and chronicles the horrendous manifestations of the following three weeks or so (with added back story, told through flashbacks concerning Setrakian) as the vampires take Manhattan --- and beyond like a pandemic, the likes of which Mankind has never seen--- and civilization begins to crumble. Our modern day Vampire enabler and top Corporate CEO Palmer uses his quiet influence to compel a news blackout concerning the true nature of what is really going on. The disappearances and deaths are blamed on a virus, and there is no meaningful resistance to the ever-growing number of vampires. Setrakian is confident that a legendary ancient book, long lost to history, will contain the answer to defeating the Master once and for all. Goodweather, has other ideas, as he plots an assassination attempt that he believes will upset the uneasy equation of the alliance between Palmer and the Master. For the rest, you will have to read the book! The real narrative, however; for me, takes place in the streets of New York, in the shuttered tenements, and other vacated buildings, and in subway tunnels where vampires, use them like `rat runs' and emerge to hunt for food. For those that try to fight, they are scattered valiant but doomed. THE FALL is believable and frightening.

The Fall Book Two of the Strain Trilogy (Audible Audio Edition) Guillermo Del Toro Chuck Hogan Daniel Oreskes HarperAudio Books Reviews
In some respect "the Fall," the 2nd Book of the Strain trilogy, was better than the 1st book and in some respects it wasn't as good. I know, "Middle of the road, Much!lol The writing, although still not that great, was better here than in the 1st book primarily b/c it didn't contain all the flowery prose or the extremely irritating superfluous descriptions and analogies. Maybe the authors read the negative reviews for the 1st book and got a clue. Nevertheless, the writing was still a bit stilted at times and at times the pacing of the story was grueling slow. However, in other instances, and there were several, when the action got going it was really exciting. The overarching plot of the Trilogy is imaginative and captivating. The storyline for at least half of this book included quite a bit of additional character development and trivia regarding New York. For me, these parts were like the extras and special features that come with a special edition version of my favorite movie. Consequently, I was able to enjoy even the aspects of the storyline that other reviewers referred to as "fluff." Some reviewers stated that this book didn't contribute to the progression of the overarching plot. In my opinion it did. I think that the latter is enhanced when the reader learns more about the characters. It makes their, motivations, actions, reactions and emotions more plausible and relatable. At least it does for me. Another thing, despite the gravity of the plot, the books so far haven't been riddles with profanity and there's not sexual content.
In an effort not to spoil the story for potential readers, I won't get into specifics. However, I will say that I found some of the lives lost in this book particularly saddening but that's one of the things I love about Del Toro's movies you never know how things are going to turn out. (Pan's Lybrant comes to mine. I was totally heartbroken by the little girl's fate.) I will also so say that when ever "Kelly" came into play I wanted to scream "would someone pleasssee kill her already." "Give me a silver sword and I'll do it. Sheesh!"
Overall, this was a pretty good and frequently captivating read. Things aren't looking too good for my guys or humanity but, man, I can't wait to read the last book. Nevertheless, as always happens when I really like a series, I'm a little bummed that it's ending. I will try to read the last book vvveeerrrrryyyyy sssslllooowwwlllyyyy! LOL The book doesn't end on a cliff hanger, per se, but each book primarily picks up close to where it predecessor left off. Thus,I don't recommend it as a stand alone read. The books really need to be read in order for maximum understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of this imaginative and frequently captivating trilogy. Enjoy!
It was after seeing the first season of "The Strain" that I actually found out that there was a trilogy of books which proceeded it. Which excited me greatly! I am mostly a reader of non-fiction, and I haven't found a series that drags on for 6 + books to maintain my interest. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of series I’m sure that go on and on, and are great material. But for me, since fiction tends to be my break from non-fiction.... it just gets a bit to long for me. So when I found out that this was a trilogy with a definite ending, I knew it was probably something I would really like.
I wasn't wrong, this second book is just as good is the first, a little bit shorter, (by about 100 pages) but this is because it’s a transition of the story from the beginning, and into the final sequences.
It is filled with lots of action, good character development, and great story telling.
The particular thing I have enjoyed about these books thus far is the writing. It is a perfect pace in my mind, it tells you what you want to know, but doesn't drag it on and on, it spaces out happenings between characters just enough to build the suspense but not so long, you have to break a moment to remember what was originally happening with the character when you last left them.
What I absolutely love about this book is the idea itself, Vampirism being a virus, I just love it! Now I haven't started the third book, so I can’t say if I am going to like the ending. But even if I had read it, it wouldn't be fair to place it here.
Overall this second book is a lot of fun! Just as enjoyable as the first, and the story develops well, and many of the characters you really start to get a personal feeling for. Not all, but many of the main protagonists and antagonists.
This is just a wonderful (thus far) horror story, filled with excitement, dread, action, suspense, and draws you in and doesn't let go. I finished the first two books of this series in just 3 days, I couldn't put them down!
I have high hopes for the third and final book of this trilogy, and if it is anything like the first two, I am hoping it will leave me feeling satisfied! If you liked the series, you will absolutely love the books!
