Out of work and £53.17 behind on rent money, could it be that Hollie Blythe has found the answer to her problems in a seemingly innocent job advert?
Probably not, as she suddenly finds herself in the employ of Caractacus Jones, a paranormal investigator whose knowledge of the spirit world is only outweighed by his love of tea.
Instead Hollie finds herself having to find answers to some of the most important questions of her life - who killed her mother, just who is the mysterious Darwin, and why must the best inventions be so dreadfully unflattering?

Before I started reading this, I was not sure whether this was a serious and dark story about the paranormal, or was it supposed to be funny. The cover photo indicated wit and humour, while the blurb indicated otherwise. It turned out to be the former. The story is evenly paced, but not fast. The plot revolves around a woman who has been out of a job, is without a man in her life, and generally a little Bridget Joneish. One day, she is suddenly solicited by a prospective employer by leaving a card and a phone number, and while her better judgement tells her to ignore such an overture, she nonetheless proceeds to go for an 'interview'. Once at the man's home-office, she realises that something is weird, but before she could decide and leave, she gets the shock of her life! From then on, it is a journey into the paranormal, murder, mystery and investigations.
Overall, I liked reading it, but did not love it. There was something missing in the story; the way the mystery is solved lacked depth. I think the reason could be that a plot of this nature requires a little more length and volume, and a short piece such as this does not do justice to it. The second half read more like a hurried short-story, where things just happened. So, while I like reading it, it did not 'grip' me. Also, what is not clear is who is the central character supposed to be- the woman, or Caractacus Jones (the weird employer). If this is intended to be a series, then Jones's character needs a little more detailing and prominence.
