For my review. Ok, the series rocks. The books are awesome. And honestly, in my opinion, anyone who says not... is a Colonel's man. hahahaa... they want "realistic end of the world scenarios"...in other words, ones that fit their apocalyptic visions and the supplies they have stashed in their bunkers. and for my other business...... let's give our mr. nova a boost of steroidal writing juice or something via internet here. PLEASE do not quit writing this series, sir. or I will start writing you emails, calling you sir, sir. Gardener is my favorite character since... I was going to say Roland Deschain, but I think by this installment, the 2 are on par in my "I love this bada**" department. And this cannot be my last vision of him. I have some questions. LOTS and LOTS of them. and when you create this fictional world for those of us who escape there...well, you sort of become a god yourself, and are responsible for our prayers, sir.
So I am praying for Gardener and Night- that they are not in Folkvangr, all done for good, but he is back in the whatwas and the story is going to continue.
amen

Gardener Winter An American Apocalypse Novella Nova 9781469967288 Books Reviews
The Gardner series takes some mind twisting to "get into", but all the books are enjoyable reads. Gardner reminds me of the description of a cat's thinking pure feral. The minor mispellings are better in this book. Nova musta got a editor.
I wish it didn't end
Gardener is sensational loved every book and have read it twice
I wish we could get some more stories between book 4 and 5
a long time. Read it. This set of books left me sorry when the end came. Gardener became my hero
Just read this installment. A great book that I highly recommend after the others. Writing has continuously improved such that with this book Nova is going to find himself hit up for (if it has not already happened) to pen a screenplay. Bottom line, this guy can write and keep you glued to your seat. It has been on my iPad for a very long time, waiting for its turn in the que - and when I opened it - I did not put it down until finished. A great wrap for a great series.
I was talking to my wife about this author the other night, how he emerged with Gardner avenging the abuse of a child with a sharpened hand-trowel. I enjoyed following Gardner's growth and movements through his short life, and appreciate how Nova's story telling prepared me for a valuable truth for writers, stay true to your course from the beginning and the story will take care of itself. I really liked all the Gardner stories, even with the mystical inclusion of Freya,
The end of the road approaches for Gardner, who has lost everything, grown old and tired of life. He has become "has gun will travel", bounty hunter and warrior for rent now. Gardner ends up becoming the hero of a tribe of Navaho Americans in old New Mexico who are facing extinction by Texas Apaches running out of water and being themselves pushed north by even more desperate and meaner Comanches. Whether those are just names adopted by survivors of all denominations or real indians is not clear. Some of the flashback memories and angry exchanges give some idea of what happened to the old gang and where they are now, including Freya. It ties up the loose ends but leaves me feeling thirsty and dissatisfied.
I've been a fan of the American Apocalypse series ever since I saw a reference to it in a blog. Gardner is not your typical 'anti-hero'. He starts off life as a perenial loser ... until the crash. Then his instincts kick in. He's a modern-day post apocalyptic gunslinger, cutting through all the BS with his own flavor of justice.
Even though there are no shades of gray in Gardner's moral code, this book, and indeed the entire series, stress' character development. Something you don't usually find in the post-apocaplyptic genre. Nonetheless, the book is full of action.
It is also realistic in it's depiction on life after "the crash", which in this case was financial; but could just have well been an EMP, nuclear, biological, or environmental disaster.
The only deviation from reality is Freya ... a Norse Godess representing the home and hearth ... but who also is the patron godess of all her protect their homes and loved ones. She helps lead her 'horde', in which Gardner is sometimes a key player, to a new homeland.
This book is the finale of the Gardner series ... but not hopefully the last Gardner book. There is a twenty-year span between this book and the last previous book in the series. I certainly hope this isn't the last book.
